Web Summit Vancouver A New Era of Innovation Unfolds

The Vancouver Convention Centre was abuzz this year as Web Summit made its long-anticipated debut in the city. With over 15,000 attendees, 1,108 startups from 64 countries, 681 investors, and hundreds of speakers, it was a melting pot of innovation and collaboration. Among the exciting announcements at this event, CycleWise AI, a groundbreaking digital health companion by AI Smart Ventures, made its entry into the tech landscape.

Whether you’re a startup founder, an investor, or a tech enthusiast, here’s a recap of the most exciting moments from Web Summit Vancouver, including a closer look at CycleWise AI and its promise to revolutionize health and wellness.

Setting Historic Benchmarks

Web Summit Vancouver wasn’t just another tech event; it set new records. With 1,108 startups from 64 countries showcasing their ideas, the pace of innovation was electric. What stood out most was the inclusivity of this year’s event. A notable 44% of the startups were spearheaded by women founders, marking a shift toward greater representation in the global startup ecosystem. These aren’t just numbers; they’re indicators of change, pushing boundaries and bringing new voices to the forefront of tech.

And if you think this was just a show-and-tell for startups, think again. 681 investors graced the summit, including big names such as Thiel Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Deloitte Ventures. For startups, this meant one thing: opportunity. Last year’s Web Summit data shows just how impactful this ecosystem is. Companies that participated in Toronto’s Collision event raised a jaw-dropping $1.2 billion within a year of attending. Web Summit stages aren’t just a platform; they’re a direct pathway to growth.

There’s one important difference in how Web Summit organizers helped start ups. In every year prior, Web Summit would pre arrange meetings between investors and start ups. This time, their response was, use the app and reach out on your own. With this attitude, several past attendees were quite unhappy, as you can imagine. Our booth neighbor had grown and sold a company based on these meetings and being connected with critical investors. I would anticipate the investment number to be reduced significantly. Let’s see if Web Summit changes their tune for the upcoming summits in Rio and Lisbon.

Key Themes That Defined Web Summit Vancouver 2025

This year’s event covered an extensive range of topics, but some stood out more than others. Here’s a quick rundown of the themes that got the tech world buzzing:

Artificial Intelligence Focus

No surprises here. AI took center stage, driving discussions about how it’s reshaping industries as diverse as healthcare, finance, and education. We heard a lot of people with a lot of thoughts about AI and none were all that monumental if you’ve been keeping up and reading the AI Smart newsletter.

The verdict? AI isn’t just a buzzword anymore; it’s a megatrend. Obvi. If you’re in business, understanding how AI will impact your industry is no longer optional; it’s essential.

Women in Innovation Leading the Charge

It wasn’t just the stats that made waves (though 44% women-led startups were impressive). It was the stories. Female-founded Canadian startups like Doubl and Aruna Revolution showcased how they’re disrupting overlooked industries, from innovative menstrual products to custom-fit bras. Web Summit’s commitment to diversity didn’t stop there, with initiatives like mentorship programs, women-centered networking events, and even discounted tickets for female participants. This wasn’t tokenism; it was a genuine effort to foster an inclusive tech landscape.

Cracking the Gen Z Code

Ah, Gen Z. The cohort that has brands scratching their heads and rewriting their playbooks. Sessions dedicated to understanding and appealing to this younger audience were packed. Where they are and what motivates them were discussed at length. Spoiler alert: To connect with Gen Z you need to be on TikTok.

Rising Importance of Sustainability

Sustainability wasn’t just a checkbox on the agenda; it was infused throughout the event. Startups in cleantech and sustainability sectors showcased innovations aimed at addressing climate change. Investors are taking notice too, with funding increasingly flowing toward businesses prioritizing green innovations. Beyond hosting cleantech, the entire event was planned with sustainability in mind. No single-use marketing, food, or any non-sustainable products were permitted by any exhibitors.

Powered Connections and Meetups

One of the standout features of Web Summit Vancouver was the 88 personalized meetups. Powered by the Summit Engine, participants received tailored invitations ensuring meaningful connections between attendees with shared interests. There was everything from AI ethics in healthcare to quantum optimization meetups.

Trade Delegations Strengthening Global Bonds

The turnout of 50 trade delegations added a global vibrancy to the event. Countries like South Korea, Turkiyë, and Austria showcased their entrepreneurial ecosystems alongside glorious startups. It’s not just startups connecting here; countries are leveraging the platform to forge stronger cross-border alliances. For example, Canadian regional groups like Invest Nova Scotia and Ville de Montréal opened new channels for international trade, placing Canada as a growing player in the world tech map.

Beyond Business Why Web Summit Vancouver Was More Than Numbers

Vancouver wasn’t just a beautiful backdrop; it was the perfect place to highlight Canada’s tech strengths while welcoming the future. This event was as much about putting Vancouver on the map as it was about advancing the global innovation conversation.

The Indigenous Attendee Program was another key initiative that set the tone for accessibility and inclusivity. By engaging First Nations, Inuit, and Métis entrepreneurs, Web Summit emphasized its commitment to building stronger relationships and acknowledging Indigenous contributions to the tech ecosystem.

Moving Forward

The stories, connections, and ideas sparked here are bound to ripple through industries worldwide.

If you’re feeling left out this year, don’t worry. Web Summit and its global events promise to keep pushing the boundaries of tech, diversity, and innovation. Keep an eye out or, better yet, schedule your calendar for the next one.
